Distec Provides Optical Bonding in New Vacuum Technology

Direct conglutination of the glass plates reduces light refraction and improves contrast

Germering (Germany) June 4, 2013 – Distec GmbH – leading German specialist for TFT-LCD flat screens and system solutions for industrial and multimedia applications – now provides optical bonding in new vacuum technology. In this process a protective glass, a touch screen or both are bonded using a high quality optical material onto a TFT display. The result is a display that is rich in contrast, offers exceptional readability, and is well suited for use in direct sunlight. „In close strategic and technical cooperation with the Japanese Taica Group, we invested in the latest generation of optical bonding technology,“ said Dieter Kiermaier, Head of Sales and Marketing Components at Distec. „This cutting edge vacuum technology has clear advantages compared to the ‚wet bonding‘ technology currently employed worldwide. When vacuum bonding, a dehydration process is not needed; as such we avoid material shrinkage related to dehydration and the resulting degradation of optical quality. Due to the consistent mechanical conditions when vacuum bonding, so-called ‚yellow spots‘ are eliminated. Additional advantages of the new process are: enhanced robustness of the bonded TFT displays (important in industrial-use cases and in outdoor installations) as well as accelerated lead time sample production.

Optimized Readability through Reduced Refraction

Vacuum bonding is suited for all TFT displays to a size of 32 inches in conjunction with touchscreens, protection glass, and/or ITO glass products (EMI shields/heaters). Vacuum bonding of single components reduces light refraction and enhances contrast, so that readability at equal power consumption is improved considerably. By closing the air gap, condensation and the ingress of dampness is avoided, making the TFT displays more stable, robust and resistant towards mechanical stresses. Heat dissipation is also improved, as heat can now be conducted outward and is no longer hindered by the isolating air layer between the glass plates.

Distec offers the optical bonding service for all available displays, independent of the standard product line card. Within the next weeks, the production equipment will be installed in the 10,000 clean room at the headquarters in Germering, Germany. Later in 2013, another production cell is scheduled for installation in the class 1,000 clean room at the sister company, Apollo Display Technologies Corp., in Ronkonkoma, NY, United States.
